ARTISTS
Sandra Devine - Landscape Architect/Painter
Michelle Ifversen - Environmental Wellness Designer/Photographer
Together, Sandra and Michelle bring you Botaniculture, a venture where nature and art infuse a sense of well being. They came together to offer clients a very niche focus of curated artwork that focuses on biophilic design. Biophilia is the love of life, connecting humans to nature. There are many ways of doing this through lighting, acoustics, texture, patterns and plant life. Studies have shown that when people have a view of nature whether simulated or real, it increases levels of wellbeing connecting people to nature. It is also proven to be more alluring, creating a more positive mood to people when looking at homes with artwork that has nature as its focus (like the smell of freshly baked chocolate chip cookies in the oven).
Sandra Devine, renowned landscape architect/painter and Michelle Ifversen, environmental wellness designer/photographer, team up to offer their paintings and photography that are inspired by nature through their eyes and journeys. They happen to be mother and daughter as well.
Sandra has had a successful career as a licensed landscape architect designing award winning projects all through the west coast for over 60 years. Her work has been published in many books and magazines like Architectural Digest and Montecito Beautiful. She designed well known projects for the Betty Ford Center and collaborated with Frank Ghery on an elaborate winery in Napa Valley. In 2018 Sandra decided to take up painting again after a long absence from going to art school. Since then she has painted over 200 paintings, many while quarantining safely from Covid. Many of Sandra’s inspirations have come from her daughter, Michelle’s photos that she has shared with her from her past travels, hikes and walks through her garden and neighborhood.
*Sandra sadly passed away in January 2023. We all miss her greatly and want her to live on thru her artwork.
Michelle Ifversen, Owner and Environmental Wellness Designer of DesignWell Studios. Michelle went to art school in Paris studying design, fine art and photography after changing her focus from studying medicine. It was there she found her love of photography from a well known American fashion photographer, Gene Fenn who mentored her and inspired her to see life from a different lens. She worked as a professional photographer for many years documenting people in their environment. Later Michelle took an interest in building science and interior design to create a more supportive, healthy environment for her family. She studied building biology, then founded an environmental wellness testing and design company back in 2006. She has since designed projects and exhibits, all centering around biophilic design winning awards and educating people about the importance of including those elements to aid in mental and physical health and healing. Michelle always has her camera with her, especially on her travels with her husband and family. Michelle consults with clients nationwide on bringing more wellness into built environments so they can be more supportive, inspirational and healthy. Michelle also writes for several publications on the importance and applications of biophilic design.
